About Dickson Marine
At Dickson Marine we are proud of our blend of traditional craftsmanship and cutting edge technology and our talented team of local boatbuilders and craftsmen take immense personal pride in their work. Over the past 30 years we’ve earned a proud reputation for meeting clients needs both local and international . We’ve cut our teeth on Government Contracts. We know that you don’t get a second chance meeting tough design criteria and tight deadlines for organisations like the Military and the Police. To tell you the truth, that’s the way we like it. Dickson Marine has the largest yacht building and refit facility in New Zealand’s extraordinary South Island. Our directors and staff bring a wealth of experience to the job. Among them we have a naval architect with experience that includes warship and passenger ship design, and model testing of new hull shapes. Be it old timber or exotic composites, a refit, a paint job, repairs or a custom new- build, we will do it all.

Our Vision
At Dickson Marine we know and understand the passion and pride that every owner takes in their boat and we are committed, whether constructing newbuilds or rebuilding the “oldies” to delivering quality and great service that reflects the finest boat building traditions and uses modern technology to its best advantage. We know that having high standards and skill levels isn’t enough – to ensure we deliver quality our team listens to what our client actually wants and creates ideas and develops inspiration to make it happen. We are a one-stop shop, coordinating all activities and developing that all-important relationship between the parties involved to ensure we meet and exceed the expectations of all.
Our Motto: “Dickson Marine, Your Yachting Partner”

Management Team
We’re proud of our record and the skills and qualifications of our management team, and we believe that our strength is in the vast range of practical hands-on experience they bring to the job.
Operations and Project Manager – Basil Hart
Basil, a qualified ship, yacht and boatbuilder, has been indulging his passion in the boatbuilding industry for some 37 years now. There’s nothing he doesn’t know about building in traditional materials of steel, alloy and timber and he just loves getting to grips with new technologies such as hi tech modern composites. Basil is the man to talk to when you want a price, or to find out how your project is progressing, or to get advice, in fact, for any aspect of customer service. When he’s not at work he can be found out on the harbour, challenging the wind and the waves or anyone else willing to take him on.
General Manager – Anita Gardner
Completing the management team, Anita brings a different set of skills to Dickson Marine which she joined over 2 years ago. She has 21 years experience as National Operations Manager for a New Zealand Shipping company, some 3 years as General Manager of a large Taxi Company and her focus is on delivery of excellent customer service and quality product which she believes is the key to a successful and profitable operation.
Yacht Services – Rocka Romcke
A real man of the sea, Rocka has vast experience in command on large international yachts. Rocka coordinates the Refit Nelson group.
Naval Architect - Harry Stronach
Also a director of the company, Harry is an expert in ship and boat design and provides technical advice. He is one of the most qualified and experienced Naval Architects in New Zealand.
Our Facilities
Dickson Marine’s Premises has been specifically laid out for boat building and refitting and boasts the following features:
- Easy access to water because of our location right alongside the Nelson marina.
- Even our location is special. One of Nelson’s unique points of difference is its proximity to the CBD.
From our premises its just a 10 minute walk to the CBD or to other specialist marine services providers. - Our 50 ton marine travelift, handles boats up to 80 ft (max width 19.6 ft).
- We have our own courtesy berth beside the travelift dock.
- We have a sealed, secure hardstand area of 18,000 sq ft with power and water available.
- We provide laundry and ablution facilities for our customers using the hardstand.
- We can provide both long and short-term boat storage on stands.
- 100 ton slipway is available just a short distance from our yard.
- Our purpose-built indoor facility caters for up to vessels up to 27 m (90 ft) long.
- We have an approved spray paint booth for smaller items.
- We have a large 50 ft oven for baking composites (hulls and components). The oven features computerised temperature control and recording systems to ensure even temperatures are maintained.
- Our wet out machine ensures accurate saturation with epoxy resins when laminating.
Awards
Insistence on the best reaps its own rewards and Dickson Marine’s quality has been recognised by those who know when the team won the South Island Marine Trades Challenge award for boat building in 2003 and then in 2005 went on to win not only the New Zealand Marine Trades Challenge but also the Australian Marine Trades Challenge.

Chris Bouzaid
SV Waianiwa
Newport, RI, USA
Dear Basil,
I would just like to thank you and the team at Dickson Marine for the great job you have done on the refit of the Waianawa.
The refit on the Waianawa was a big job and a lot of important decisions needed to be made during the project. Your system of keeping me informed and offering the different alternatives to complex problems along the way made the decision process easier and more accurate.
The paint job on the hull looks even better than I had hoped and the mast and superstructure both look great.
The new bow thruster works great and it is amazing how well it has been fitted so as not to use space on the forepeak.
I am more than happy to recommend Dickson Marine to anyone who needs work done well and in a timely manner.
Kindest Regards,
Chris Bouzaid
